Southern Railway athlete represents India in the Beijing Olympics
| Southern Railway athlete Ms.
Preeja Sreedharan, aged 26, is representing India in the Beijing Olympics
2008 in 10,000m. Appointed on Southern Railway on 02.12.2002, she is
presently working as Sr.Clerk in the Commercial Department of Palghat
Division. Earlier, she has represented India in theAsian IndoorGames at Maccau in 2007 and won Silver in 3000m. She has won Silver in 5000m at theAsian Track and Field at Jordan and at the Asian Indoor Championships in Doha in 2007. She has also represented India at the Doha Asian Games in 2006. She is the current national record holder in 10,000 mts. In the international arena of sports, several of oursports persons have won accolades. Athlete Sajeesh Joseph (Sr.Clerk/DCM/ O/PGT), who won the gold at the international meet at London in 800m, represented India at theAsian Indoor Games at Doha and won the Silver in 800m. Mr. Binish Soman, (Khalasi, SSE/O/CLT) was part of the Indian Railways team that won Gold at the World Railway Cross Country Championships at the Czech Republic. Ms. Geethu Anna Jose, (Sr.TE/MAS) has achieved the distinction of becoming the first woman basket ball player to play professional league in Australia. Shri K.Ratnakaran, (Sr.TTE/CLT) and Shri B.T Muralikrishna, (JAA.Sr.DFM/O/MDU) will represent Indian Railways at the World Railway Chess Championships in Czech Republic in September2008. |

Commendable initiatives to reduce energy consumption

The Electrical Department of the Tiruchchirappalli division has achieved savings to the tune of Rs.1 crore through its commendable initiatives in reducing energy consumption. Bifurcation of domestic and commercial consumptions with varying tariffs, has led to a savings of Rs.45 lakhs. Another Rs.40 lakhs was saved through implementation of voltage optimization to reduce consumption of energy from 210 volts/ 240 volts to 210 volts/ 220 volts without compromising on the output quality of light or performance of 1 equipments. Use of energy efficient electrical equipments and maintenance of the powerfactor above 0.95 have resulted in savings of Rs.15 lakhs.
